Imphal, October 06 2016:
Congress MLA Nongthombam Biren who was elected from Heingang Assembly Constituency today announced that he has resigned from the post of MLA and also quit the Congress party.
N Biren joined electoral politics as a founding member of the Democratic Revolutionary People's Party (DRPP) which was set up in the aftermath of the historic June 18 event of 2001 before he joined Congress party.
Speaking to media persons at his Luwangshangbam residence today, N Biren said that he has tendered his resignation letter to the authority concerned.
Meanwhile, sources informed that Speaker of the Manipur State Assembly has accepted MLA Biren's resignation.
On being enquired about the reasons which prompted him to quit Congress and resign from the Assembly, Biren said that incumbent Government has failed to bring good governance in the State.
The State Government has failed abjectly as an elected Government as testified by its failure to bring a solution to the issue concerning the popular demand for enactment of a Constitutional safeguard for protection of indigenous peoples of the land in the process of which a young student was killed as well as the death of nine people at Churachandpur, he said.
'I was not happy to be a part of such a Government", Biren said.
If one is an elected representative, he/she must work for the welfare of the people and act in accordance with the pulse and aspiration of the masses.
But what the State Government was doing was just the opposite, he asserted.
'After consulting the Government's performance with the people of Heingang AC since a few months back, I finally decided to quit the Congress and resign from the Assembly", Biren said.
It is disheartening that the incumbent Government has shown no empathy with the people's growing apprehension about possible extermination of all the indigenous communities in case a Bill is not passed and enforced to regulate the incessant influx of outsiders, he added.
Referring to the release of three NSCN-IM cadres who were arrested for extortion recently, Biren questioned the legitimacy of the State Government.
He said that he joined electoral politics through DRPP with a strong conviction to protect human rights and safeguard the integrity of Manipur.
'However, as only two DRPP candidates were elected, I joined Congress party so that I can work for the people more effectively and purposefully", he continued.
He said he was a part of the State Government which made Assam Rifles vacate Kangla and repealed AFSPA from seven Assembly segments.
In spite of several measures taken up by the Government, plights of people settled in both the hills ad valley have not waned a bit.
All the socio-economic and political issues plaguing the State as well as the deplorable conditions of the two highways which connect Manipur with the rest of the world can be attributed to absence of good governance in the State, Biren said.
On being enquired about the political party under whose banner he would fight the 11th State Assembly election, Biren said that the matter would be decided after due consultation with the people of Heingang AC.
Notably, N Biren was a key leader of Congress party who was elected from Heingang AC for three consecutive terms.
Meanwhile, BJP Manipur Pradesh vice-president M Ashnikumar has remarked that the resignation of Congress MLAs Y Erabot and N Biren exposed the rot within Congress and the Ibobi Singh-led Government.
When the leaders of the party, whom the people trust as credible performers, resign, the signals are very clear.
The corrupt Government of the coterie cannot hold its house in order.
The house of the corrupt coterie Government is collapsing.
The Congress Government in Manipur thought it could fool the people of Manipur all the time, said Asnikumar.
But the resignation of the two key Congress leaders proved that the public-befooling approach of the Congress has boomeranged on the party itself.
While saluting the courage of N Biren, Asnikumar said that there will be a BJP Government after the 2017 State Assembly election.
