Displaying the two individuals and the seized arms and ammunition before media persons at SP Imphal East conference hall, Haobijam Jogeschandra (SP Imphal East) said that at around 3 am today, Imphal East district police received credible information regarding the transportation of sophisticated weapons towards Imphal city along Imphal-Dimapur road.
As such, a combined team of Imphal East commando and a column of 6 Assam Rifles, launched a mobile search and frisking operation in the general area of Koirengei and Mantripukhri along the route.
One Toyota Innova SUV coming from Koirengei side, was signalled to stop for checking but instead of stopping, it sped towards Imphal side.
The combined team gave chase to the vehicle for around 2 kilometres and finally caught up at Khabam Chumbreithong area, in front of Salai Agro flour mill.
On checking the vehicle, one AK 56 assault rifle with magazine (loaded with 20 live rounds), two AK 56 magazines and 60 live ammunition rounds, were recovered from a hidden chamber located on front side of the vehicle.
The occupants of the vehicle were identified as Khupngaishuan Paite (25) s/o (L) Lamkhenthang Paite of Siloam Veng, Churachandpur (presently staying at Bungmual village, Churachandpur) and Songthianlam Paite (34) s/o Khamzamang Paite of Bukpi village, Thanlon (presently staying at New Lamka, Churachandpur) Khupngaishuan Paite revealed that the two of them went to Dimapur on the instruction of his father-in-law, Chinzasen Paite, and on reaching Dimapur, they met an unknown individual sent by Chinzasen Paite who handed the arms and ammunition over to them.
Khupngaishuan Paite further revealed that they were on their way back to Churachandpur with the weapons.
As such, they were arrested on spot and the arms and ammunition along with the Toyota Innova, were seized, the SP informed, adding that it was also learnt that the two individuals have been earlier involved in smuggling arms and ammunition.
A regular case has been registered against them at Heingang PS, the SP added.
