Thoubal district records highest number of SOP violators

Imphal, April 28 2021:
Highest number of Covid SOP violators was recorded in Thoubal district today with the detainment of 209 persons followed by Imphal West with 126 persons.
The Police Department continued the crack down on violators of guidelines and restrictions issued by the State Government and the State Disaster Management Authority in connection with COVID-19 pandemic, including failure to wear mask in public places, failure to maintain social distancing in public places, spitting in public places, etc.
to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the State.
During today's drive, altogether 372 persons were detained across the State and released after warning and a sum of Rs 1,01,700/- (one lakh, one thousand and seven hundred only) were collected as fines from SOPs violators, said a statement by the Police.
The Police Department warned that those who violate the SOP shall be dealt with strong legal action under National Disaster Management Act, 2005 and other appropriate laws.
In total, the Police Department has collected a sum of Rs 1,87,05,810/- (One crore eighty seven lakh, five thousand eight hundred ten only) as of today.
It is unfortunate that the public continue to break the guidelines laid down by the State despite the increase in penalty for SOP violators and the alarming situation of the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic and increasing number of Covid cases daily.
On the other hand, at least 10 persons were produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West today for violating the Covid safety guidelines and restrictions by Manipur Disaster Management Authority and the State Government after a non-FIR case was registered against them at the City police station under section 32 of Police Act 1861.The arrested persons are Ratik (25), s/o Sanjoy Jain of MG Avenue; Vikas (23) s/o Yammu of Paona Keithel; Nahatomba (57) s/o Matalip of Uchiwa; Amir Khan (20) s/o Ibohal of Kwakta, Wasir (19), s/o Nahathen of Phundrei; Kajal (52) s/o Manindra of Lalambung; Babul (23) s/o Alaodin of Lilong; Nantu Bhatachargi (59) s/o Sachindra Bhatragi of Serou; Tayenjam Romen (30) s/o Tomba of Khurai Thangjam Leikai and Okram Bomcha (40), s/o (L) Shyamkeshore of Khongman Zone V.After perusing the case record, the Court explained the particulars of the offence to the accused persons and asked them whether they plead guilty or not.
As they accepted the charges levelled against them, the Court convicted them to either pay a fine of Rs 1000 each or undergo simple imprisonment for 3 days.
They were eventually released on furnishing the fine and the same has been deposited to the State's account.
On the other hand, Imphal police station also detained 17 persons for violating the guidelines and produced them before the District Magistrate Imphal West.
They were detained for not wearing masks and not maintaining social distancing in public places.
They confessed the charges levelled against them and the District Magistrate Imphal directed that a collective amount of Rs 17,000 be imposed on them as penalty for not wearing masks in public places.
The police managed to collect a total of Rs 12,000 and 5 out of 17 who failed to pay the fine were detained till 6 pm .
