The Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West today remanded 12 persons including 5 women to seven days police custody till May 4 for allegedly assaulting a woman and wrongful confinement of the victim.
The persons identified as Naorem Sanajaoba (34), Naorem Babuloo (31), Nao-rem Romesh (31), Naorem Tarukton (38), Naorem Sanatomba (65), Naorem Bipin (31), Naorem Bijen (63), Naorem Abem Devi (35), Naorem Tarubi (37), Naorem Victoria Devi (29), Naorem Elizabeth (29) all from Kakwa Naorem Leikai and Elangbam Naocha @ Nishibala (38) of Langthabal Mantrikhong Awang Leikai, were arrested in connection with yesterday's arson and assault case of a woman at Naorem Leikai Amujao (Sofa) Leirak.
They were produced before the Court by a team of Singjamei police station along with a prayer for 7-day police remand.
The IO of the case through APP submitted that a case was taken up regarding the incident after the victim lodged the complaint regarding the assault and confinement yesterday at around 3 pm.
In her complaint, the victim mentioned her confinement after being called by accused Sanatomba's wife Geetabali at around 11 am yesterday to clear debt (Rs 8,50,000) Sanatomba and Geetabali borrowed around three years back, the IO submitted.
It was further mentioned that some men and women stormed Geetabali's house while the victim was there and dragged her out before snatching away her mobile phone.
The accused persons also tried to strip her and forcibly took her to Naorem Leikai Pena Khongba community hall, the IO continued.
The victim in her complaint further alleged that accused persons punched and kicked at her head and other parts of the body en route to the community hall during which the police personnel arrived and rescued her from the crowd, the IO submitted while continuing that it came to light that a gold chain and Rs 30, 000 were also allegedly snatched from the victim by the accused persons during the incident.
The IO further submitted that arrested accused persons along with their associates obstructed the police officers and personnel while trying to rescue the victim.
In order to arrest other persons involved, the accused persons are highly required to be remanded to police custody, the IO submitted.
The Court, considering the nature of the alleged offences and stage of the investigation, allowed the prayer for remanding them to police custody for 7 days till May 4 .
