Imphal, January 21, 2012:
Arrest and subsequent detention of Manipur people's party (MPP) nominee in Heingang Assembly Constituency Yanglem Mangi, under National Security Act is politically motivated, alleged party president Dr Nimaichand.
speaking to newspersons at a solemn reception function of Y Mangi at the MPP office today, Dr Nimaichand contended that the MPP candidate for the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly election was arrested/detained by trumping up fabricated charges to subjugate political rights of the candidate.
The arrest was also intended to enable his main rival draw mileage, alleged the MPP chief.
Mangi was released from prison yesterday following a Court quashing his detention under NSA.
Mangi and four others were apprehended by police on October 30 last at Khagempali Panthak area while they were travelling in his (Yaima's) Bolero jeep.
Police claimed to have recovered one 9 mm pistol from the five persons.
maintaining that there is no rule of law under the present Government and Mangi was made a political victim, the MPP president also described the SPF Government as an enterprise/company run by a few individuals whose agenda is to victimise any person who pose threat to them.
Pointing out that no legal action was initiated against Ministers/MLAs when weapons were recovered from their Babupara residences, a ruling party member continued as a Minister inspite of involvement in shooting and injuring the State's Advocate General, and alleging leniency against the son of a Minister who shot dead a youngster, Dr Nimaichand Luwang asserted that time has come for the people to vote for a change.
Speaking at the occasion MPP legislator O Joy conveyed that as Mangi was arrested due to political instigation, the party considers him as innocent and consequently allotted him the MPP ticket to contest in Heingang AC.
He also conveyed gratitude and satisfaction that political workers and supporters of Mangi continued to campaign for him when he was in prison.
Y Mangi, who also spoke to newspersons said he was imprisoned under false charges which was ultimately proved with the court ordering his release.
He also thanked party leaders for their continuous support and endeavour for the sake of justice.
Mangi expressed that bringing a positive change in Manipur now lie in the hands of the people.
