RIMS road in focus on its B'day

The 40th foundation day of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) was celebrated today at the Jubilee Hall of the Institute with Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh as chief guest.
Addressing the gathering who turned up for the occasion, the Chief Minister pointed out that RIMS is the largest Centrally run institute in the North East India and said that it is an institution not only of regional importance , catering to the needs of the Northeast region, but also of National importance imparting undergraduate and post-graduate medical education.
Maintaining that health is an essential prerequisite part of life and medical profession is such a prestigious service as it is service to human being, the Chief Minister informed that MBBS courses now include 15 percent all Indian quota.
Pointing out that sudden influx of additional post-graduate students for all India quota numbering 75 per annum has recently recreated a large gap between the requirements and existing facilities of hostel accommodation and other infrastructures, the Chief Minister assured that the Government of Manipur will take it up with the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India to provide adequate financial assistance for developing necessary infrastructures in RIMS.
The Chief Minister observed that the recent heavy rains inundated low laying campus of RIMS due to poor drainage and caused a major breakdown in the functioning of RIMS, the Chief Minister further assured that necessary steps will be taken up to improve the drainage system and prevent such occurrences in future.
The Government will also take up all necessary steps to improve the power and water supply in RIMS and the road from Nagamapal to Supermarket, Lamphelpat will also be black-topped at the earliest, he added.
Presided over by Director of RIMS Prof S Sekharjit Singh, the foundation day celebration was also attended by Lok Sabha MP Dr Th Meinya, retired head of Department of Ophthalmology Prof RK Bhabinisana and retired head of Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Prof Kh Tomba Singh as guests of honour.
It may be noted here that of the 1800 strong force work in RIMS, about 280 are teaching doctors.
The hospital has 1074 beds.
During the last 12 months, 2,81,604 patients attended the OPD; 88,736 patients were treated in the emergency; 36,000 were admitted in the different wards; 5,542 major and 3,382 minor operations were conducted.
RIMS has also produced a total of 2,633 doctors, 845 specialist doctors and 22 MPhil in Clinical Psychology so far.
