The 40th Foundation Day of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) was celebrated today at the Jubilee Hall of the Institute with Chief Minister O Ibobi and Dr Th Meinya, MP Lok Sabha as the Chief Guest and President respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister, O Ibobi assured that black topping of the road connecting RIMS will be done by November this year.
The government is also giving more priority in providing Health Care facilities to the general public.
There is also a plan for developing a water body in Lamphel area.
With this, the people of this area will get the required amount of water for all purposes.
He further said that RIMS was transferred to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GoI from NEC, Shillong under the Ministry of DoNER with effect from 1st April 2007 .
It now admits 100 MBBS students, 147 PG(MD&MS) students, a few diploma students, 7 M Phil students, 50 Bsc Nursing students and numerous certificate and short course students.
Stating that state government will pressure the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to provide adequate financial assistance for developing the necessary infrastructures of RIMS, the Chief Minister added that the 50 year old building of RIMS also needs major maintenance including expansion works.
The Chief Minister further went on to say that the recent heavy rains inundated the low lying campus of RIMS due to the poor drainage system and caused a major breakdown in the functioning of RIMS and assured that necessary steps will be taken up to improve the drainage system.
The state will also take up all necessary steps to improve power supply to the premier institute.
Speaking on the occasion, S Shekharjit, Director RIMS said that RIMS has been under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare since 2007 .
Now there are 1800 employees in RIMS.
A Dental College is also to be established and its session to start from the 2012 academic session.
He further said that during a 12 months time around 2,81,604 patients have been treated at the OPD, 88,736 emergency patients were also given services.
5542 major and 1800 minor operations were also done during this period.
The Foundation Day was also attended by Prof RK Bhabisana, retired HOD of Opthalmology, Prof KH Tomba, retired HOD of Obsterics and Gynecology and Prof H Shanti, Medical Superintendent in charge as the Guest of Honour.
