CCpur District Hospital hard pressed to manage OT

CCpur, March 23 2021:
The Churachandpur District Hospital, the biggest and busiest State-run hospital in the district is acutely short of staff and surgical equipment as it constantly performs more than 1700 surgeries on a monthly basis.
A record accessed by The Sangai Express shows that out of 1750 surgeries it performs in a month, 150 of them are major surgeries while the remaining are minor ones.
Ironically there are only two Anaesthetists to attend to these surgeries which indicates that each of these Anaesthetists need to attend at least 875 surgeries a month, if they are to be alloted duty evenly.
The Gynae OPD too attends to 1300 patients on an average in a month and performs about 35 surgeries a month but the hospital has only 2 Gynaecologists and they are constantly a drained lot both physically and mentally, said a source.
The Orthopaedics Department is no different as the hospital has only 1 (one) surgeon.
The lone surgeon has so far taken the onus of performing an average of 40 surgeries the hospital has recorded in a month.
Besides performing more than one surgery a day, the ward has recorded a turnout of about 1200 patients a month.
As if the human shortage are not enough, the hospital authorities are struggling to arrange essential equipment in almost all the departments.
This, sources said, lead to many unnecessary referrals of poor patients to other hospitals.
At times surgeons on seeing the plight of their patients often perform surgeries outside the hospital on humanitarian ground, it added.
