Meira paibis of Jiribam clashed with police and security personnel at Jiribam police station yesterday evening following the arrest of two leaders of the Manipuri Students Federation, MSF, reports reaching here said.
At least two women were reportedly beaten up the police in the melee.
According to sources, the incident occurred after the police picked up two leaders of the MSF, identified as Kh Gambhirchand, and L Somorjit, as well as one U Dilip Singh yesterday.
Local meira paibis submitted a memorandum to the local SDO and the SDPO seeking their release, but were refused.
The meira paibis thereafter held a meeting at the Irabot statue during which another confrontation took place with the police.
Sources said a woman, identified as Jinibala, 24, was dragged by the police to the Jiribam police station.
The other womenfolk came in pursuit, and in the melee, another woman, Sushila Devi, were also reportedly beaten up.
The police also fired a few rounds in the air inside the police station to quell the womenfolk, the sources added.
The report also said the two MSF leaders along with Dilip have been taken away to Imphal, while Dilip has been released.
