Stating that establishment of big industries in the State would be an uphill task in view of poor power supply and demography, Art and Culture Minister Pheiroijam Parijat suggested encouraging growth of more self help groups to sustain their contribution to the State's economy.
speaking as the chief guest during the closing ceremony of the 10 day 'Hado Crafts Bazar 2007' at Mapal Kangjeibung today the Minister noted that almost all SHGs run exclusively by womenfolk is thriving as sincerity and hard-work are the hallmark of these SHGs.
Prevailing upon banks and financial institutions to extend all possible cooperation including in procuring loans, the Parijat also applauded Help and Development Organisation (HADO) for hosting the trade fair.
Opining that such an endeavour would give tremendous boost in sustaining the SHG movement apart from providing opportunity to artisans to showcase their talent and products, he called upon HADO to take the initiatives in recommending loans for new SHGs.
Urging HADO to expand their vision and concept to other districts as well, the Minister also assured his personal initiative in ensuring that the Government pave the way for sale of the products.
Mani Singh of the Marketing Service and Extension Centre, Office of the DC (Handicrafts) speaking as the guest of honour informed that the Crafts Bazar that showcased array of local products in 150 stalls achieved excellent sale.
He also pointed out that there is a proposal for hiking craftsman pension scheme from Rs 1000 to Rs 3000. Dignitaries present on the occasion distributed prizes to the top position winners in the categories of best discipline, best seller's stall and best display in addition to the chief guest handing over Rs 500 each to the toppers.
UBI's District Manager M Modhu Singh and director of Commerce and Industries were among others who spoke during the closing ceremony.
