Thongam Bung alias Bungbung, announced by AMADA as the leader of a gang involved in snatching mobile phone handsets, watches and other items at gun-point, along with another accomplice has been apprehended by AMADA volunteers from his Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai residence today.
The 27 year old Bung s/o Th Nata Singh is informed to be a rifleman of the 4th Bn IRB while his accomplice picked up today is said to be one Meisnam Bhim Singh (21) s/o (L) Ibohal.
Bhim is also from Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai.
A country-made pistol with one live round has been recovered from Bung's possession, said secretary of AMADA's Drive Committee Konjengbam Meghachandra during a press briefing this afternoon.
AMADA had paraded/produced four other members of the gang yesterday whose modus operandi include way-laying unsuspecting individuals at various places of Imphal and nearby areas and robbing them of their belongings, mostly mobile phone, wrist watches and money.
It may be mentioned that Bung and another youth were asked to surrender to AMADA within April 7. According to Meghachandra all the apprehended gang members have confessed to robbing and intimidating individuals on atleast eight occasions.
Informing that in the past few days AMADA had received more complaints from individuals of their belongings (phone/money) being robbed, Meghachandra stated that the supposed victims would be intimated for verification procedure by parading the apprehended members of the gang.
If the complainants can substantiate their claims the gang members would be asked to return the robbed items within April 10. Meghachandra also informed that Bung and the recovered small arm would be handed over to IRB officials, while the others would be handed over to their respective family elders.
