Opium worth Rs 2.64 cr seized

Imphal West District Police arrested one person and seized 88.45 Kilograms of opium worth Rs 2.64 crore in international market along with Rs 19.85 lakh in cash from Kangla-tongbi Shantipur yesterday.
The arrested person has been identified as Sandeep Limbu (31) of Erang Part-I, Dhoreghari, Senapati district.
He was staying at Shantipur.
Briefing media persons at his office, Imphal West Superintendent of Police, K Meghachandra said that police arrested the person during a search operation yesterday in and around Kanglatongbi Shantipur at around 8.30 pm.
The search operation was conducted after getting reliable inputs from sources, he said.
A team of the police led by Imphal West DSP Amarjit Singh and Y Kishorchand was patrolling and conducting the search when Sandeep ran inside a house.
He was then detained and interrogated.
When searching inside an Eeco van parked in front of his house, the police personnel found two gunny bags containing 22 packets of opium.
The total weight of the opium seized is 88.45 Kilograms and is worth around Rs 2.64 crore in the international market, said the SP.
On preliminary interrogation, Sandeep has revealed that the opium was handed over to him by a person named Premjit of Sekmai yesterday afternoon and was supposed to be sent to one Karan in Guwahati.
Following the instruction of Karan, Sandeep had collected Rs 19.85 lakh from some persons in Imphal Bazar area.
The amount has also been recovered by police, said SP Meghachandra.
Sandeep has also admitted that he has so far transported opium five times.
Sandeep along with the seized items have been handed over to Sekmai police station, he added.
