Imphal, October 28 2012:
Ahead of the scheduled Indo-ASEAN car rally, repairing work on the 220 Kms long NH-2 (Imphal-Moreh highway) has been initiated.
An official source in PWD informed that the Indo-ASEAN car rally would enter Moreh and pass through the highway on December 15 .
In view of this international car rally, repairing work including surface levelling, filling up potholes and clearing road-side drains has begun.
As per instruction of Govt of India, the highway would be repaired so that the rally pass off smoothly.
For this work, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has already sanctioned Rs 83 lakhs.
Portions of the highway assigned to different agencies between Mao-Moreh should be repaired fully ahead of the car rally, said the official.
Those agencies who have completed road development at different sections of the highway with due sanctions should repair their allotted portions in case the repairing period has not lapsed.
However, the amount sanctioned by the Ministry would not be utilised for road development works executed or being executed with due sanctions nor in periodical repairing.
The amount would be used in only original works of which sanctions have not been granted yet.
After the car rally, signboards embossed with the words 'Asian Highway Route' would be put up at different portions of the highway.
The worst dilapidated portion along NH 2 is the MaoMaram section which was earlier handled by the BRO.
In accordance to a revised estimate for improving the same section, the Ministry is expected to release Rs 11 crores ahead of the car rally.
As for the 25 Kms long Maram-Senapati section, seven contractors are repairing the section.
On the southern side of the highway towards Moreh, the condition of the highway has improved.
Nonetheless, repairing work has been initiated on worn out or broken portions along Imphal-Moreh section of the highway, informed the official.
There are still certain portions along the section being repaired by M/S Avantika Pvt Ltd around 30 Kms away from Moreh which are not very satisfying.
Works Department has instructed the company to complete the repairing work ahead or at least make the section traffic worthy ahead of the car rally.
Roads in Imphal city which are lying in chaotic condition due to the sewerage project would also be repaired ahead of the car rally, added the official source.
