Imphal, May 24 2016:
As part of the ongoing mass movement for enactment of the three Bills passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly on August 31 last year, a large number of students and women activists today tried to storm the office of BJP Manipur Pradesh but their attempt was thwarted by police.
As announced earlier, volunteers of JCILPS Students Wing and Women Wing marched towards the Nityaipat Chuthek office of BJP Manipur Pradesh at around 1 pm.
However, when they arrived at the office complex, Imphal West district police had put up iron barricades and put in place all precautionary measures.
The students and women activists marched up to the barricades shouting slogans such as "Enforce ILPS in Manipur", "Convert all the three Bills into Acts", "Political parties should go to Delhi", "Outsiders should not contest elections and cast votes in Manipur" etc.
As the protesters and police personnel came face to face across the barricades, there was some tussle between the two sides.
However, when the protesters pushed harder, police resorted to firing tear gas shells and mock bombs.
The students retaliated by pelting stones.
Altogether nine persons sustained minor injuries in the confrontation including five students and a woman activist.
Three police personnel including a lady officer were also injured.
On account of the confrontation, Keishampat Parking which was otherwise always crowded was deserted for sometime.
It also caused traffic jam at Keishampat Junction and in front of the Raj Bhavan.
Another group of students tried to storm the BJP office for the second time but they were pushed back by police who fired tear gas shells and mock bombs.
Moreover, two students namely Bruce and Bidyalaxmi were also pulled up by police.
Following the incident, tight security arrangements have been made in and around the BJP office.
