Imphal, May 24 2016:
Information Centre for Hill Area Manipur (ICHAM) president N Rajendro has urged the Government to procide assistance to the farmers who have been affected by the recent flood and heavy rainfall.
He along with an ICHAM team visited flood affected areas like Uyumpok, Nunghsum, Keibi and Khomnam of Khundrakpam AC today.
Later, he distributed materials for the construction of poly houses to the farmers at Nungshum Primary School ground.
He said that the Government needs to acknowledge the hard work of the farmers towards making the State a self reliant in food production.
As such, the Govt must provide asssistance to the farmers affected by the recent flood and heavy rainfall, he observed.
Stating that the State must have a separate policy for the farmers, Rajendro said that the authority concerned also needs to work efficiently and honestly so that the benefits under various schemes reach the farmers.
Maintaining that enhancement in production would not serve any purpose if there is no market and cold storage, Rajendro said that the Government also needs to put in effort in this regard as well.
He said that only 20 per cent of farmers in the State have lands and the remaining are landless because they have sold their lands as it is now hard to earn livelihood through agriculture due to the absence of proper market and storage facilities.
