Protests erupt, effigies burnt

Protests erupted in different parts of the State today soon after the Manipur Regulation of Visitors, Tenants and Migrant Workers (MRVT&MW) Bill was passed in the Assembly.
Members of JCILPS today burned the effigies of Chief Minister O Ibobi, Home Minister Gaikhangam and Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly Th Lokeshore soon after the draft Bill introduced in the Assembly by the Chief Minister on March 13 was passed on the last day of the Assembly session today.
Members of Students' Wing and Women's Wing of JCILPS burned the effigies of Chief Minister, Home Minister and Speaker in front of THAU complex today around 4 pm.
The protesters also shouted many slogans demanding the resignation of CM O Ibobi who allegedly failed to work for the welfare and of the people of the State.
Speaking to media persons, M Angamba, convener of JCILPS student wings said that the Bill passed in the State Assembly was totally against the aspiration of the indigenous people of the State.
He asserted that the MRVT&MW Bill is incapable of protecting the indigenous people rather it is a Bill which provides security and protection to the non-locals.
Conveying its readiness to launch various types of intensified agitation to demand a legislation to regulate migrants in the State, Angamba also stated the State Government should be held responsible for any untoward incidents happening in this connection.
At the same time, police personnel were seen deployed at various locations including the offices of various student bodies as part of security measures.
Meanwhile, vendors of Khwairamband Keithel rose in protest soon after learning that the MRVT&MW has been passed in the Assembly today.
The vendors this evening raised slogans at Khwairamband Keithel demanding the resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi, Dy CM Gaikhangam and other Ministers.
They also demanded the immediate implementation of ILPS in the State.
The vendors' bid to take out a rally was foiled by security forces who arrived at the site in large number later.
