Imphal, May 12 2021:
Amid the rising cases of COVID-19 and death toll amid the second wave of the pandemic, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has urged the Centre to establish a 1000 bedded Covid hospital in Manipur.
In a letter its president Govindas Konthoujam wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, MPCC said the Manipur Government is yet to build an emergency Covid hospital, it promised when facing the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic on March 30 last year.
Had the Government established the promised 200 bedded Covid hospital at Langthabal as promised, today's surge in Covid infections and mortality in the State would have been much slower and lower, said Govindas in the letter.
He further highlighted that the district hospitals in the State are not adequately equipped with ICU, ventilators, medical oxygen and requisite equipment, and they are short of doctors, nurses and other staff.
As a result, there is a genuine fear of chaotic situations in the rural and hill districts of the State.
"The present State Government has completely failed in saving the lives of our people," Govindas said.
He then urged the Prime Minister to establish a 1000 bedded exclusive Covid hospital by DRDO (Defence Research & Development Organisation) and Indian Army to combat COVID-19 .
He also urged the Prime Minister to fully equip all district hospitals with a minimum of 100 beds each immediately under Central assistance with strict instructions of the PMO (Prime Minister's Office) .
Free vaccination of all including those in the age group of 18 to 45 years must be expedited on war footing and regular vaccine supply in the State must be assured, wrote Govindas to the Prime Minister.
