Imphal, August 25:
A police constable, who had been detained by the underground RPF/PLA with the charge of acting as an informer for the Army, was released unharmed today by cadres of division V of the outfit.
The policeman, identified as from Mangi alias Ibomcha, 38, of Patsoi part II, serving at the Patsoi police station, had reportedly been in the RPF's custody since August 18 last.
He was handed over to volunteers of local clubs and meira paibis before media persons somewhere in Imphal west today.
A spokesperson of the underground outfit told mediapersons that Mangi, along with the present officer in charge of Patsoi police station were acting as informers of the 8th Assam Rifles posted at the police station, resulting not only in arrest of UGs, but also harassment to civilians.
The spokesman said Mangi had been caught by cadres of the outfit at Salam village on August 18 last.
He added that they were under instructions to award him capital punishment, but because of intense pressure from local organizations and meira paibis, it had been decided to release him.
The spokesman also maintained that the local organizations, meira paibis, and his family would be responsible for his subsequent activities.
The spokesman, while observing that many people were acting as informers for the security forces, warned of dire consequences if they did not stop their activities immediately.
He also appealed to the guardians and parents to guide such people away from their activities.
