Imphal, January 25:
Greeting the people of Manipur on the eve of the 57th anniversary of the country's Republic Day, Governor Dr SS Sidhu observed that Manipur has made progress in various fields since its merger with the India Union in October 1949 even though it is much below the desired level as compared to other States of the country.
However, the Governor noted that the stride Manipur has made in the field of sports, arts and culture and social awareness sector is remarkable.
Dr Sidhu called upon the people for a serious introspection into the economic backwardness of the State despite the rich natural and human resources.
Saying that the State Government has been taking various programmes and projects for the development of the State, the Governor observed that it's high time to get out of the vicious cycle of poverty and low investment.
It is sad to learn that the projected economic growth rate of Manipur in the 11th Plan period is the lowest in the country, he said while stressing on need for transparency and efficiency in the delivery system, administrative machinery for redressal of public grievances.
The menace of corruption has to be curbed with a strong hand.
This is what the Manipuri society calls for at the moment, Dr Sidhu asserted.
Maintaining that the law and order situation, though tense and fragile, was well under control during 2006, the Governor noted that ethnic and social tensions, senseless killings, heavy extortion and abductions continue to be causes of serious concern.
Stressing on the inevitability of cooperation between the Government and the people, Dr Sidhu stated that dialogue is the favoured approach of the Government to resolve any conflict situation.
Asking people to elect the most deserving among the candidates, the Governor conveyed that the ensuing elections would be peaceful, free and fair.
The IG of Assam Rifles (South), Major Gen BK Chengapa has also extended his greetings to the people of Manipur on the occasion of Republic Day.
