Imphal, January 25:
Two young boys were crushed to death by a mudslide that occurred this afternoon on the Imphal river bank near Sanjenthong.
The victims both from Haokip Veng have been identified as Holkhothang (12) son of (L) Lallet Haokip and Seiboi (12) son of Khupjang.
The incident site is located on the western side of the river bank near Haokip Veng.
According to eyewitnesses, the three boys, including Holkhothang and Seiboi were playing along the river banks from where sands are collected in truck-loads almost everyday when the mishap took place.
The mudslide buried them even as the impact was minimal on the third boy who escaped unscathed.
The lucky survivor crossed the knee-deep river and shouted for help which alerted the locals.
The local people rushed to the scene and removed the earth to pull out the entrapped youngsters.
The boys were rushed to RIMS Hospital but were pronounced brought dead.
Some agitated locals conveyed to media persons at the incident site that the mudslide was caused due to random digging and excessive collection of sandand asserted that in case the sand collection activities are not done in a systematic manner complete prohibition of the same could not be ruled in future.
A team of police and later fire brigade personnel also arrived at the mishap site but by that time the boys were already rushed to hospital.
A case has been registered on the matter at Porompat police station while post mortem on the corpses would be conducted tomorrow.
