Imphal, December 24:
Irrigation and Flood Control Minister N Mangi Singh has given assurance of completing the Wangjing River Control Project being taken up at Khangabok and Tentha under Thoubal district and to relief the people of the areas from the ravages of annual flood from next year.
Talking to reporters after inspecting the site and the progress of the project today, Mangi asserted that the project could not be commissioned within its stipulated time as there was some problems in connection to payment of compensation to the affected land owners.
In spite of that Phase I and II of the project have already been completed and so far Rs 52.52 lakhs out of the total estimated cost of Rs 1.18 crores have been expended on the project, he disclosed.
The Minister assured that the remaining Phase -III and IV.
of the project and its associated works like strengthening of the river embankment, dredging of river bed and repairing of the approach road would be completed within March next.
While informing that six residential houses located between Wangjing and Lamding, two in Lamding Makha besides another at Tentha Khunou have been reportedly affected by the project and State Government would be paying the due compensation, Mangi stated that stalling of the project on compensation ground would be unfortunate and would be the loss of the people.
People should realise that every year during monsoon season thousands of acres of land both cultivable as well as residential areas are flooded due to water overflowing of the river.
