In separate incidents police gunned down two persons in the heart of the city, a small time trader was shot dead, an elderly man collapsed, a truck ran over a youth, another shot through the legs while a suspected drug addict died of overdose in the State.
In its relentless drive against underground activists, personnel of Imphal West Commandos gunned down two youths suspected to be UGs at Allugali in Thangal Bazar, under City Police Station, at around 2.30 pm.
According to a report, received by the press, the Commando party on getting specific information of suspected UGs active in Thangal Bazar areas, waited for the UGs to show up in the area for the past two/three days hoping to nab them.
Their relentless wait finally paid off this afternoon when the two youths found moving in the area suspiciously flashed out a hand grenade when asked to stop.
They were instantly killed by the commandoes before hurling the grenade, according to police source.
One Chinese grenade and two Indian made hand grenades were recovered from the two slain persons, said the source.
City Police has registered a case against the incident.
The bodies have been deposited at RIMS morgue for identification and necessary medical procedure.
Of the two youths, one is said to be slim and dark complexioned clad in a black corduroy jacket and a blue jersey.
He bore bullet wounds on the left hand, left leg and near the left ear.
The other youth is said to be fair complexioned and well built and is reported to be wearing a grey jogging shirt with blue jeans.
He got a bullet wound in the left cheek which penetrated through the back of his head.
A man expired at Chingmeirong last night after he failed to recover following a sudden collapse.
The man has been identified as Yengkhom Shyamchandra (33) ofKakching Mayai Leikai.
The Lamphel police has registered a case in connection with the incident.
The body has been handed over to family members today after conducting post mortem at RIMS.
In another incident, a youth was killed this morning near Sajiwa jail, under Lamlai police station when a truck ran over him after slipping from a speeding bus he was traveling in.
The youth has been identified as Ningthoujam Dinet (17) from Ningthemcha Khul.
In a gruesome incident suspected to have taken place yesterday at Nganukon, 15 kms south of Moirang police station, a grocer was murdered by unidentified person after robbing off all his goods, said a source.
According to police source, the victim has been identified as one Papukumar (26) from Karinjiya (Bihar) presently residing at a rented quarter in Pandon, North AOC.
The body was found near a paddy field of one Saikhom Prafullo early this morning.
The victim's neck had strangulation marks as well as wounds beneath the left eye and under the chin.
A bamboo stick around 5 ft long suspected to be used by the killer/s was also found near the body.
According to family source of the deceased, the victim is a small time business man dealing in grocery items.
He is reported to have left Imphal on a bus with his cycle for selling his items in Saiton, Phogachau Ikhai and Nganuton areas.
The body has been handed over to the family members after a post mortem at RIMS Hospital.
An unidentified youth suspected to be a drug addict died this morning at North AOC from overdose.
Police have retrieved the body.
and is being kept at the RIMS morgue, said a source.
The deceased youth is reported to be wearing a grey Moreh jacket with a blue track pant, added the source.
Bomb hoax: On receiving information that some suspected UGs had planted a bomb under a culvert at Ningthoukhong Kha Khunou of Bishnupur district, personnel of the BSF blocked the road leading to the suspected site and conducted a search operation at around 1 pm, said a source.
However, nothing substantial except some few wires were recovered from the site by the BSF.
When concerned police post were inquired they denied receiving any report on the matter.
In a late evening incident two youths identified as Pukhrambam Jampu (20) s/o Raghu of Chingamathak and Maisnam Bung (25) s/o Muhindro of Kwakeithel Moirang Purel were shot through their legs near Keisamthong Elangbam Leikai.
