Imphal, January 12 2010:
Thirteen bronze plates have been stolen from the war cemetery of the Indian Army located at Hatta, Imphal.
According to information received by the press, the bronze plates inscribed with the names of slain Indian Army Adali Shah, Liyakat Khan, Sheikhusian, Wazir Ali Khan, Allah Baksh, Kamal Khan, Baiz Khan, Md Islam, Gulam Ahemad, Mufashil Hussein, Allah Ditta, Sher Dil and another unknown solider were found stolen on the night of December 30 last.
The war cemetery is being maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in memory of the Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during the Second World War.

In order to investigate the incident, Regional Manager, North East of Commonwealth War Graves Commission has filed a complaint with the Porompat Police Station and the matter has also been reported to the office of the Commission at UK.
It is learnt that for the upkeep of the war cemetery, there are three Malis but there is no chowkidar to keep guard at night.
Talking to The Sangai Express, Regional Manager of the Commission, Salew Pfotte informed that there was similar incident of stealing the bronze plates from the same places some years earlier and new bronze plates have been installed recently.
There are in all 828 graves in the war cemetery but in all 868 Indian soldiers have been cremated and buried, the Regional Manager conveyed, while disclosing that Vice Chairman of the Commission office at UK is expected to visit Imphal for inspection of the cemetery next month.
The General Manager wished that in addition to the Indian Army war cemetery at Hatta, security personnel make inspection round at the Second World War cemetery at Deulahlane at least once in a day.
