Imphal, October 05:
Manipur today joined the rest of the world in observing World Teacher's Day along with paying befitting tributes and honours to those who are in the teaching profession in recognition of their contribution to the society.
The World Teacher's Day is being observed on October 5 every year in commemoration of the 1996 joint declaration of UNICEF and ILO for giving due respect to those who are in the teaching profession.
The main function of the World Teacher's Day was held under the aegis of All Manipur Elementary School Teachers' Association (AMESTA) at the office complex of ZEO, Wangoi.
Education Minister L Jayantakumar Singh and president of AMESTA Wangoi Unit Ng Ibohal Singh were respectively chief guest and functional president of the observance which was also attended by MANITRON Chairman MLA Dr Kh Ratankumar Singh, MLA of Wangoi Assembly Constituency Salam Joy Singh, Zonal Education Officer Kh Upro Singh and general secretary of AMESTA Ch Shantakumar Singh as guests of honour.
The chief guest led other dignitaries in lighting the ceremonial lamp to inaugurate the function as well as in honouring the dedicated teachers who are no more and those who have retired from the service with simple gifts and mementos at the outset of the observance.
Later addressing the gathering as chief guest, Education Minister L Jayantakumar observed that inspite of being one of the most noble professions, many people seem to be not interested in taking up teaching profession these days.
It is essential to find out the reason behind this decline in the interest of teaching profession.
The Minister further observed that even if every person in Manipur is well aware of the existing irregularities in the education system, it would not be right to leave the task of rectifying these irregularities to the Minister or the authorities concerned only.
On top of this, we should also do away with the habit of pointing fingers at each other and work together with sincerity and dedication for ushering in quality education in the State.
In his address, MLA Dr Ratankumar pointed out that education is the backbone of the society.
Even if many people define education in their own, that which can provide proper knowledge of education should be considered as meaningful education.
He also said the role and contribution of the teachers in reforming the society should be given due recognition by all and they should not be subjected to any sort of harassment.
Correspondingly, teachers should also dedicated themselves to the cause of moulding the moral character of the students who are the future pillars of the society.
MLA Salam Joy, who also spoke at the occasion appealed to the Education Dept for doing the needful to improve the education system of the State.
