Imphal, October 05:
The fourth edition of Saratchand Thiyam's Nungshibi Greece, a travelogue which won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2006 was released by noted Manipuri writer MK Binodini during a simple function at the latter's residence at Yaiskul here today.
All the writers who were present at the present at the book releasing function appreciated the assurance given by Education Minister L Jayantakumar to institute award by the Govt to encourage them.
Speaking at the occasion, Saratchand Thiyam lamented that the State Govts in other parts of the country are encouraging their writers, the same has not been done so in Manipur.
It is only after long years of demand that the Government of Manipur has decided to give due honours to the Manipuri writers.
The assurance given by the Education Minister for taking up necessary measures in this regard very soon is appreciable, he added.
MK Binodini who presided over the function, also appreciated the gesture of the Government and observed that giving awards and honours to the writers would go a long way in nurturing literary works and encouraging budding writers in the State.
