With the State Government stepping up resource mobilization activities in the wake of the acute financial crunch, the State Transport Department has been able to collect revenues exceeding it's target during the past two years and the trend is continuing in the current year too.
Deputy director Transport BK Sharma today stated that his department was able to collect a total of Its 2.77 crs against the targeted Rs 2.46 crs as revenue during 1999-2000.A total of Rs 3.24 crs was collected against the proposed Rs 1.77 crs for 2000-2001 and the target for 2001-2002 is Rs 3.43 crs, he said, adding that they are confident of crossing the target this year too.
On the parking problem in the city, Sharma said that Transport Department was facing serious problem's regarding allocation of parking slots due to the swelling number of vehicles and population in the State.
Stating that the State presently has 83,500 two wheel and four wheel vehicles presently, the official said that his department is trying to ascertain the number of State registered vehicles that have become condemned and those that had been sold off outside the State.
Reports of certain District Transport Officers have been received in this regard, the official said.
He said that the vehicle congestion including those in front of the State Secretariat has largely affected traffic regulation.
To check the traffic jam in front of the Secretariat, the eastern roadside in between the entrances of the Kuki Inn and the Telecom Telephone Bhavan will be reserved for Government vehicles.
Private vehicles can park in the eastern roadside between the southern gate of Police HQs, and the 1st Manipur Rifles main gate, he added.
Meanwhile, a notification issued by the Transport secretary today has reconstituted the regional transport authority of Imphal East, West, Ukhrul and Tamenglong district.
The four member body will be headed by director Transport as the chairman and DTOs will be the member secretaries.
