Art Award handed over

Governor Anusuiya Uikey handed over Arts Society Manipur's prestigious 6th Governor's Art Award to renowned painter and sculptor Laishram Phonindro Singh from Nambol Phoijing Chingmang Awang Leikai in a solemn ceremony held at Raj Bhavan Imphal today.
The award carries a citation, shawl and a cash prize of Rs 10, 000, said a statement issued by PRO Raj Bhavan.
Laishram Phonindro is also a recipient of various notable awards, namely, Manipur Sahitya Parishad's Kala Bhushan Award (2012), Vayoshrestha Samman Award and Indira Gandhi National Excellence Award (2016) .
The Governor, who is also the chief patron of Arts Society Manipur extended her congratulations and good wishes to the awardee.
She expressed happiness that such an award will provide a platform for upcoming artists, boost their morale and uplift the artist community as a whole.
She also called for more platforms in the form of art exhibitions for young artists.
Inspecting Laishram Phonindro's exemplary art works, she expressed her appreciation and said that such works will carry the legacy of the artist in the generations to come.
The triennial award was given to the 81-year old artist in recognition of his achievements in the field of painting and sculpture.
Notably, Laishram Phonindro was born on February 15, 1942.He received a diploma in Fine Arts from the Government College of Arts and Craft, Kolkata and went on to pursue further studies at Sir JJ School of Art Mumbai.
He became an art teacher at JN Navodaya Vidyalaya thereafter and consistently participated in various arts exhibitions, seminars and workshops held across the country.
The veteran artist continues to paint and sculpt at his studio and share his extensive knowledge to his students.
