A Syam calls for promotion of Sankirtana

Eminent filmmaker Arib-am Syam Sharma has raised posers over alleged lackadaisical attitude of the government with regard to preservation and development of Manipuri Sankirtana, which is a pride for the land and even included in UNESCO list of 'Intangible cultural heritage list'.
Speaking during the observance of Sankirtana Day' organised by Art and Culture Department and Manipur Nat Sankirtana Apunba at Ramji Prabhu Mandir located at Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal on Monday, Syam Sharma lamented that the government seems uninterested to take up any initiative for Nat Sankirtana.
As chief guest of the function, he said that Manipuri Sankirtana is not only a cultural heritage but also a pride for the people of the land.
In order to preserve it, UNESCO recognised it as one of the intangible cultural heritages.
It is unfortunate that the government failed to take up initiatives for the preservation and development of the land.
It is important for preservation of Manipuri Sankirtana and make the future generation aware of the cultural asset, he stressed.
Syam also highlighted the need for inclusion of Manipuri Sankirtana in school syllabus.
The observance was presided by State commissioner (Arts and Culture) M Joy Singh.
Later, artistes performed Nat Sankirtana.
Meanwhile, Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy and International Sankirtana Day Celebration Committee observed 'Sankirtana Day' at the academy's auditorium.
The observance was attended by Manipur Legislative Assembly speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, International Sankirtana Day Celebration Committee Imphal president Aribam Brajakumar Sharma, JNMDA visiting Guru Nameirakpam Mangai and director Pukhrambam Bilash.
