Imphal, December 04 2023:
The Waithou Phumnompat Conservation Committee has appealed to all organisations to abstain from causing disturbance to activities being taken up for protection and preservation of Waithou Phumnompat, which is the lifeline of many farmers.
Addressing media persons at Thiyam Konjil, on Sunday, Committee secretary Takhellambam Praphulo said that Phumnompat, which was earlier known as Phunalpat, has been providing livelihood to the farmers since time immemorial.
However, due to human intervention, the condition of the lake deteriorated to such an extent that it was on the verge of becoming extinct.
Nevertheless, the directorate of environment and climate change took up measures to protect and preserve the water body consequently enabling the farmers to focus on agricultural activities.
He further informed that the directorate has been taking up measures to keep the water of Phumnompat clean.
In addition to digging ponds to harvest rain water, planting of trees around the lake is also being taken up.
Such activities of the government have been a blessing for the farming community.
Therefore, no individual or organisation should cause disturbance but help in preserving the lake so that it could be restored to its original form.
