Imphal, November 18 2012:
Even though it was reported that Vimiya Raikhan self immolated in front of her husband, her parents are contending that Vimiya was torched alive by her husband or forced to take the extreme step because of her husband's atrocity.
The aged parents have been asking why a young pregnant woman having a lovely son and a daughter would commit suicide.
In connection with the controversial death of Vimiya, an FIR was registered at Ukhrul police station and her husband L Ningpamshang was arrested under IPC Section 498-A/326/307 .
He is currently lodged in judicial custody.
Vimiya Raikhan reportedly self immolated in a rented house at Phungreitang at about 12 midnight of August 25.She was admitted in RIMS the next day.
Five days later, Vimiya delivered a stillborn baby and she herself succumbed to the burn injuries after 45 days of medical treatment on October 8 .
Information received from Ukhrul PS said that investigation was going on into the controversial death of Vimiya.
Once the post mortem report is received, due procedures would be initiated to frame charge-sheet without any delay, they said.
Vimiya Raikhan was the daughter of P Raikhan and Khatingla Raikhan of Riha village, Ukhrul district.
She entered into wedlock with L Ningpamshang of Lunghar village in 2008.She already had a three year old son and a one year old daughter when she died.
Mourning the death of her daughter, Khatingla said that her daughter was subjected to perpetual harassment by her husband.
"Very often, Ningpamshang would thrash Vimiya mercilessly saying that he was not the biological father of their son", the grief-stricken mother said.
Even when Vimiya was alive, Ningpamshang had affairs with other women and he also brought a few women home.
Khatingla said, "Vimiya was restless to meet her children but the children were not allowed to meet their mother even though she was dying because her parents-in-law forbid" .
"She asked me to take her children to Riha together with us and also to look after them with care and love after her death", the mother recalled.
"But I've no idea how they are doing at their father's house", she added.
The son who witnessed the horrible scene of her burning mother often said, "Father set ablaze mother.
Mother has expired", Khatingla quoted .
Vimiya's elder sister Pemmi Raikhan too alleged that Vimiya was murdered by her husband and in-laws.
Unable to bear constant harassment by her husband and in-laws, Vimiya delivered her daughter at her parental home.
"We were always treated with disrespect and contempt just because we came from southern Ukhrul", Pemmi recollected.
Vimiya came back and stayed with her parents for almost two months in 2011.She went to her husband's home on the promise of her father-in-law that there would be no more harassment.
But Vimiya's parents-in-law always overlooked or condoned their son when he tortured Vimiya ruthlessly in inebriated condition saying that it was natural behaviour for an alcoholic.
Even on the hospital bed, Ningpamshang coaxed Vimiya in my presence saying that she would be treated properly if she did not tell she was beaten, the aggrieved mother recalled.
