Tamenglong, January 17 2015 :
As dry season continued to rule for the last few months, people of Tamenglong particularly those residing in town area are facing a hard time.
Irregular supply of drinking water by PHED has further compounded the problem faced by the people in the district headquarters.
A survey conducted by Hueiyen Lanpao, found that all the amin sources of potable water - streams, springs, wells and ponds had dried up.
Now, the people have no other option left except to depend on PHED water supply.
Most of the wells in localities sourced from streams have been "shut and locked" to prevent people from drawing water except for relaxation of few minutes so that one could draw just two to three buckets a day.
One can see people flocking wells left open and many residents were making a beeline to draw drinking water.
In contrast, the rich who could afford to construct water tank at home buy potable water for Rs.250 per 500 liters.
However, even the potable water sellers are finding it difficult to fetch water as all sources have dried up.
When contacted, PHED officials in Tamenglong disclosed that water coming from Khongjaron is not sufficient for regular supply in the town area.
He said the pumping of water from Jeilan also stopped since January 10 as the machine used for the same was damaged recently.
"To fill the water reservoir, it takes four to five days", stated one chowkidar.
PHED official also disclosed that due to repairing of the water tank at the treatment site, water could not be pumped for storing.
Efforts were being made to ameliorate the situation, said an official.
