Imphal, January 07 2017:
CorCom has condoled the demise of Prof Gangmumei Kamei which hailed the late Professor as a distinguished son of the soil who guided Manipuri society in different fields.
A statement issued by CorCom media coordinator Ksh Yoiheiba also conveyed solidarity to the bereaved family, relatives and the public.
Prof Gangmumei Kamei was an erudite scholar who worked to carry on the legacy of Manipur's social, cultural and civilizational history without allowing any form of distortion or manipulation.
He was an educationist, a historian, an intellectual, a leader and a pride of Manipur, said CorCom.
When the communal time bombs planted by the colonial ruler started exploding which resulted in divisions among different communities, Prof Gangmumei emerged as a dedicated social activists and started working relentlessly to re-unite the different communities of Manipur and pointed out through his many works that hill people and plain people shared an inseparable bond.
He did extensive research on the bonds shared by different indigenous communities of the land and worked relentlessly to guide the future of Manipur based on true cultural and social history.
This was reflected unmistakably in his different books and works, the CorCom remarked.
His work 'History of Manipur' clearly pointed out that hill people and plain people belong to a common tree of genealogy.
He also clearly laid down that the future of Manipur should be determined by the hill people and plain people collectively.
The National Convention of October 28-29, 1993 where it was resolved that the Merger Agreement of 1949 by which Manipur was allegedly annexed by India had no legal and constitutional validity was presided by Prof Gangmumei Kamei along with Prof Naorem Sanajaoba, Senior Advocate Ahanthem Nilamani and Ningombam Ibobi.
Prof Gangmumei further pointed that there was no future for all the people of Manipur if they overlook the history of the land.
Through his extensive research works, Prof Gangmumei worked tirelessly to instill a sense of nationalism among the masses.
He worked for sometime at JNU as a teacher.
But he retired from Manipur University as a Professor of History Department.
He also took pro-active roles in all the efforts aimed at development of tribal groups.
The demise of Prof Gangmumei Kamei is an irreparable loss not only for Manipur but for entire WESEA.
Yet his works and contributions continue to inspire both the hill people and plain people who have been struggling to protect their identities, it added.
