Imphal, August 29:
The Manipuri Students Federation (MSF) has come out strongly against the trend of collecting large amount of money from the students as donation for celebrating Teachers Day.
In a statement, vice president of the student body Md Atabudin observed that although the day is very significant, making elaborate preparations and collecting huge amount of money from the students for presenting expensive gifts to the teachers is unhealthy.
This unhealthy trend is prevalent all the more in the private schools where the parents of the students even take undue interest in celebrating Teachers Day, he pointed out.
In some of the schools, Teachers Day celebration is extended for days making it an occasion for unbridled merrymaking, he alleged.
The significance of the day should not be lost in crass materialism.
Students do not need to donate handsome amount and go out on the streets to collect donation from the public for the occasion.
Even a simple gift like pen, diary, etc is more valuable than any other expensive gifts if it were given sincerely and from the core of the heart, the MSF said.
The student body further suggested celebrating Teachers Day on a particular day in remembrance of a prominent educator of the State just as the people have started conducting social service on September 30 in commemoration of the birth anniversary of Lamyanba Irabot instead of the earlier tradition of conducting social service on Gandhi Jayanti on October 2.The intellectuals and other concerned citizens of the State should give a thought to this, MSF said further.
Our Staff Reporter adds: A number of students have been coming out on the roads and stopping vehicles on donation drive for Teachers' Day.
