Expired cotton, IV fluids crowd Ukhrul District Hospital

The 50 bedded Ukhrul District Hospital has not been receiving any supply of medicines from the Govt for at least the past one year resulting in the stock of drugs running very low.
When enquired, more than 41 boxes of Govt supplied IV fluid like 5% DNS drip, absorbent cotton wool, IV set, and gelco were available as of now.
However most of the absorbent cotton wool had expired, a sample of which is available with The Sangai Express.
A packet of absorbent cotton wool, manufactured Om Surgical Industries, Rohtak in Haryana which had the manufacturing year of 2008, with the expiry date given as three years after manufacturing date, was procured from the Hospital a few days back.

The IVS fluid too expired in October 2013 .
As medicines had not reached the hospital for the past one year, medicines and drugs were purchased from the open market.
Antibiotics like cephaxin was found already expired.
Other medicines available at the hospital are due to expire in 2014 and 2015 .
Medical Superintendent Dr Ayao who is also CMO in-charge, said that the hospital has been facing shortage of medical officers.
Coupled with this, the hospital has been facing acute shortage of medicine.
Since the supply of medicines had fallen short, the hospital authority is compelled to charge Rs 50 per patient to attend to their emergency needs, the MS said further.
