Imphal, June 23 2010:
Furious over the assault of one of the autorickshaw drivers by Assam Rifles at Moreh, the autorickshaw drivers went on the rampage breaking windshields and headlights of taxi service vans in the border town Moreh of Manipur today.
At least, 11 taxi service vans were damaged.
Official reports received from the town bordering with Myanmar said that today, at about 9.30 am, personnel of 31 Assam Rifles posting at the international border gate beaten up a auto-rickshaw driver allegedly for making traffic congestion by parking his auto in an improper place.
The auto drivers under the banner of the All Moreh Auto-rickshaw Owners and Drivers Welfare Association later turned their anger on the taxi service vans which were parked on the roadsides and started attacking the vehicles with sticks and any available weapons.
In the attack, windshields and headlights of at least 11 vans were broken down, the report said adding that tension among the auto drivers and van drivers surfaced in the aftermath of the incident.
A meeting was held this late evening between the auto drivers and taxi van drivers along with AR officials and ADC Moreh.
However, no agreement could be arrived at.
The meeting will resume tomorrow morning.
