Govt studies resource centre

With a view to ensuring self-employment and economic alleviation of women, a committee is examining feasibility of opening a State women's resource centre, stated Social Welfare and Cooperation Minister AK Mirabai.
Coinciding with the 21st foundation of the Manipur State Women's Development Cooperation, embroidery, tailoring and weaving machines were distributed to women, who have vocational training, at a function held in the training hall of Rural Women and Children Development Welfare Association, Taobungkhok, Imphal West.
Speaking at the function, AK Mirabai said that a committee comprising of experts has been studying the feasibility of opening a women resource centre for economic alleviation of women.
The State Women's Development Cooperation has constituted many self help groups and the cooperation is actively considering to provide loans to these self help groups.
Moreover, authority concerned has begun extending financial assistance to victims of violence against women.
Rape victims are being given financial assistance of Rs one lakh.
Apart from initiating many anti-child trafficking measures, preparations are underway to build children homes in each and every district of Manipur.
Efforts are also on to raise living condition of women by introducing a new scheme, Mirabai claimed.
The cooperation was set up in 1993 with the primary objective of improving living conditions of women.
Vocational training programmes as well as awareness campaigns meant for women are also under progress.
Only 30 per cent of the costs of machines being given to trained beneficiaries are borne by the beneficiaries while the remaining 70 per cent is given as subsidy by the Government.
Social Welfare Principal Secretary Barun Mitra, OSD S Chhabra and Director L Ibobi were also present at the function.
