Impact of Shumang Leela analysed

A one-day seminar on 'Impact of Shumang Leela from Traditional Clown of Manipur' organized by Repertory for Performing Arts of Manipur (REPAM), Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai under the sponsorship of Ministry of Culture, Government of India was held at Manipur Press Club here today.
The seminar was attended by Naba Wareppa, president of Theatre Centre Manipur and L Iboyaima Singh, chairman of FACE as Chief Guest and President respectively.
Addressing the gathering, Naba Wareppa pointed out that Shumang Leela of Manipur is very different from other drama and traditional plays in the world, whether it is in term of presentation, entertainment value or giving message.
He observed that given the role and importance of Shumang Leela in the society, it is necessary to enrich and preserve this traditional performing art form.
Maintaining that Shumang Leela could be included into the list of cultural heritage of humanities of UNESCO if everyone made a collective effort to this goal, Naba Wareppa pointed out that other medium like cinema which relies heavily on technology poses a challenge to the traditional art form.
L Iboyaima said that Shumang Leela has been taking up important issues in the society like corruption, crime and violence in the form of entertainment play to sensitize the public and added that adherence to dedication and discipline should be the top priorities for Shumang Leela artistes.
During the technical session of the seminar which was conducted with Naba Wareppa as the moderator, Ph Gunachandra Sharma, president of Manipur State Shumang Leela Council spoke on the theme of the seminar.
