One Havildar of the Indian army was killed in a shoot out with militants at a village near Borobekra in Jiribam sub-division today at about 8 am.
The village is located about 13 kilometres from Jiribam police station.
According to reports filed by Captain Toushar Ashiratnam of the 9 Para Field Regiment to the Jiribam police station, personnel of the 9 Field Para Regiment came under heavy attack from militants while they were on ROP duty today at about 8 am.
The security personnel also retaliated and in the ensuing gun fight the Havildar was killed, said the report filed with the Jiribam police.
The deceased Havildar is identified as Muttam Singh (15114320-F).The body has been taken to Masimpur hospital at Assam.
A spokesman of the UNLF informed the press that the encounter was between its armed cadres and the security personnel.
The spokesman said that the UNLF cadres were ambushed by the Army and in the ensuing gun fight one cadre of the outfit was killed while one Army jawan was also killed.
One gun of the UNLF was taken away by the security personnel while the UNLF cadres also managed to seize one gun from the security personnel, said the spokesman further.
A PTI report however said that six militants and one jawan were killed in the shoot out and added that arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot.
UGs held: Thoubal police commandos and personnel of 3 IRB arrested a captain of the UNLF from Thoubal parking today at about 3.30 pm, said sources.
The arrested man has been identified as Maimom Gyaneshore alias Chaoba (38) of Pangaltabi Mayai Leikai.
Personnel of 28 Assam Rifles also arrested one PULF activist yesterday at about 2.30 am.
The militant is identified as Khullembam Sikander Saha (25) of Ngariyan.
He has been handed over to the police.
One sympathiser of the KYKL was also arrested by personnel of the 19 Assam Rifles yesterday at about 11.20 am.
The sympathiser is identified as Leitonjam Bhupendro alias Boy (24) of Wangkhei Mayai Leikai.
