Imphal, June 07 2011:
Inefficiency and negligence on the part of personnel assigned to the Thoubal district Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) came to the fore as an official team led by MLAs M Oken and M Hemanta carried out a surprise check today.
M Oken of Heirok Assembly Constituency and Tentha AC representative M Hemanta along with Social Welfare Department Director G Satyabati assessed the ICDS office condition as well as facilities in some anganwadi centres on their return after a spot inspection with regard to establishment of SOS villages in Thoubal district.
In many of the anganwadi centres the team covered, basic facilities such as furniture were not in place in addition to poorly maintained classrooms.
At the ICDS office, consumable items meant for the anganwadi children were found not distributed and kept in disorderly manner.
A particular enclosure within the office complex where more consumable items is suspected to have been stored could not be accessed as it was found locked and the custodian of the key not traceable inspite of the inspection team summoning the individual concerned.
Interacting with some newspersons, G Satyabati said anganwadi workers/helpers were instructed to ensure basic infrastructure such as classroom and separate rooms for use as godown in their respective anganwadi centres for which financial assistance had been made about a year back.
She also asserted that serious action would be initiated against anganwadi workers/helpers who were found not discharging their duties.
On the other hand, inspection for locating suitable sites was carried out to establish SOS villages at Andro and Thoubal.
It is informed that SOS Village, where a number of houses would be constructed, will serve as shelter place for destitute children and widows.
