Imphal, September 03 2012:
Ahead of the 12-hour bandh called by North East Students' Organisation (NESO) across the North East on September 6, the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), a constituent of NESO Monday has appealed to the people of Manipur to extend support to the proposed strike.
Talking to reporters at the AMSU office premises here, Thokchom Suresh, president, AMSU informed that NESO has already submitted a representation to the State Chief Minister requesting him to send a Government representative to take part at a mass rally, part of the general strike to be staged at Guwahati city on September 6 .
Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra will be sending their respective Government representatives to participate at the rally, while the Northeast MPs' Forum will also take part as representative of the region, he further informed.
The bandh has been called especially to protest the insecurity and threat caused by illegal migrants in the region and also to show strong opposition against the acts of mainland India which allegedly treats the people of Northeast as "second class citizens" in other parts of the country, Suresh said.
He said NESO has urged the concerned Governments to take up proper steps to address the threat against the people residing in other parts of the country but the Governments of mainland India are not listening to the clarion call.
The AMSU president also appealed to the state Government including Manipur education boards, Manipur University and Education Department to make special arrangement for all the students, who have fled their educational institutions in other parts of the country, to continue their study here.
Suresh also thanked the state Government for its ongoing drive to deport foreign nationals and other illegal migrants in the state but he expressed his desire to the Manipur Government for a long term policy on the migrant issue on its own volition without any interference from the Union Government.
The proposed 12-hour band begining 6 a.m.of September 6 will end at 6 p.m on the same day but all kinds of religious ceremonies, including media, fire service and medical related activities will not be covered by the purview of the strike.
