Imphal, June 19 2021:
Protests were held on Saturday in various parts of the state by Communist Party of India (CPI) Manipur State Council, CPI Konthoujam Local Council and Manipur People's Party against the steep rise in prices of petroleum products.
Left Front Manipur with CPI Wangkhei Local Council organised a sit-protest at Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal, during which CPI state secretary L Sotinkumar lambasted the BJP led Union and state governments for harassing citizens of the country by increasing the prices of petrol and diesel.
The protesters also paid floral tributes to the statue of Hijam Irawat installed near the protest venue and also raised slogans against rise in fuel prices.
Meanwhile, CPI Konthoujam Local Council launched a half-month-long protest at Kamong Langonjam Farming Co-operative Hall on Saturday.
On the other hand, Manipur People's Party organisation & media vice president Dr M Ibomcha Singh contended that due to failure of the BJP government to control prices of petroleum products, the cost petrol per litre has reached Rs 104.50 and diesel price has gone up to Rs 91.27 per litre which has resulted in exponential rise in prices of essential commodities, construction materials and transport fare, thus hurting not only the people of the state but the whole nation.
He questioned whether the oil companies are not under the Union petroleum minister.
Does the government have no right in fixing the prices of fuel? The government must immediately work to reduce the prices of petrol and diesel, Dr M Ibomcha demanded.
