AR seizes 58 kg opium, smuggled timber

In a major breakthrough against smuggling of illegal drugs & contraband items, Khuga Battalion Assam Rifles foiled a drugs smuggling bid on Wednesday.
In a release, PRO IGAR (S) informed that based on reliable intelligence, Security Forces established a mobile vehicle check post on national highway 102B near Gel-jang village and intercepted a vehicle with two suspected drug peddlers.
On detailed search of the vehicle, 58 Kg of opium worth Rs 34.8 lakh was recovered concealed inside the doors of the vehicle.
The drug peddlers were identified as Lulun Chongloi resident of Khopi Veng, Kangpokpi District and Haopu Toutsang resident of Aigejang village, Kangpokpi district, said the release adding that the apprehended drug peddlers along with 58 Kg opium worth Rs 34.8 lakh were handed over to Churachandpur Police Station for further investigation.
In another incident, troops of Assam Rifles foiled an attempt to smuggle timber near Heirok village in Thoubal district on Wednesday.
In a release, PRO IGAR (S) informed that based on credible inputs from the reliable sources, troops of Assam Rifles intercepted two vehicles carrying timber.
On thorough checking of the vehicles, smuggled timber assessed to be worth Rs 1.58 crore was recovered.
The seized timber along with the apprehended individuals were handed over to Forest Range Office Thoubal for further legal action, said the release.
On the other hand, troops of Assam Rifles along with 165 TA foiled timber smuggling near Khudengthabi on Tuesday.
Based on specific intelligence, a team of Tengnoupal Battalion launched a search operation at 8 pm on Friday.
The team intercepted a truck carrying teak wood.
On thorough checking, 45.395 cubic feet of teak wood was recovered from the vehicle, said another release issued by PRO IGAR (S), adding that recovered teak wood and apprehended individuals were handed over to forest department for further investigation.
