MLA Th Lokeshwor will be the Deputy Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, lying vacant after Th Shyamkumar had quit, as no other MLA filed nomination for the post, of which the election is scheduled tomorrow, on the last day of the extended budget session of the Assembly.
The election was scheduled to be held tomorrow in the House of the Assembly but as a consensus among the members of both the ruling and the opposition has been arrived at not to hold the election but to project a member acceptable to all members of the House.
Members of both ruling and opposition proposed the name of Th Lokeshwor.
A total of 13 members nominated Lokeshowr's candidature for the post.
Opposition leader Radhabinod Koijam was one of the proposers.
His proposal was supported by MLA Doukhongmang Haokip.
Others who proposed MLA Lokeshwor's name included MLA Ng Bijoy, seconded by former Deputy Speaker, Th Shyamkumar, RK Anand seconded by Khangthuanang Panmei, Wungnaousung Keishing's proposal was seconded by Dr I Ibohalbi and E Suraj's proposal supported by Kunjakishore.
Even though there are no definite rules that the post of Deputy Speaker should be given to the Oppostion, the post is usually offered to the Opposition.
But this time, with none coming forward from the opposition, and as there was no proposal for any Opposition party for the post, it was decided to offer the post to MLA Lokeshwor of Congress.
Forty-three year old Th Lokeshwor, elected in the by-election in Khundrakpam Assembly constituency of Imphal East in 2007, would be the 25th Deputy Speaker of the state Assembly.
He was born on April 13, 1967, and is an MA in History.
