Imphal, July 29 2010:
Movement of vehicles along the Imphal-Dimapur section of National Highway-39 has been severely affected after a large portion of the highway sank near Khongnem village in Senapati district early this morning.
The area is known as a sinking zone, prone to such incidents, especially during Monsoon.
According to a Senapati district police source, nearly 100 feet of the Highway has sunk to about 30 feet thereby bringing vehicular movement to a complete halt from around 7 am today.
It is informed that several vehicles are stranded on either side of the sunk portion.
Officials of the state PWD have been despatched to oversee the repairing work of the affected portion at the earliest, said an informed source.

Tadubi AC MLA K raina, along with the PWD officials made a spot inspection to assess the damage and information received here indicate that resumption of vehicular movement along the Highway would be possible only after three days even though restoration work has already commenced at the site.
It is said that new tracks would have to be made by cutting the upper slope of the sunk portion for which the campus of Assam Rifles would shrink by about 8 metres.
Commanding Officer of 22 Assam Rifles was also present during the inspection, the source said while conveying that top officials of the Assam Rifles have also been intimated with regard to development of new road by taking away some portion of the AR campus.
This is not the first time that land sink has occured on the NH-39 stretch between Imphal and Dimapur.
A few years back, in 2004 or 2003, a massive mudslide had literally swept away a number of villages at Kanglatongbi and the adjoining areas causing widespread damages to the environment and flora and fauna of the area.
Rampant deforestation, jhum cultivation and the loose soil formation are the main factors for the recurring sinking roads and mudslides.
