Threat leads to closure of JNIMS

The Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal has been closed as doctors and staff resorted to a ceasework strike to protest alleged threat by some armed security personnel and a patient party.
However, medical services to the already admitted patients in the hospital will not be affected by the strike.
The JNIMS/JN Hospital Staff Co-ordination Committee said it unanimously resolved to suspend service at the OPD, emergency services and routine OT in protest against the threat on doctors and staff members on duty.
It said some armed security personnel, including a patient party had bullied the doctor and staff at Ante-natal Ward of Obstretics.

The decision to call the strike was taken during an emergency meeting of all the doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and all support staff of JN Hospital and JNIMS at the Conference Hall of the Medical Superintendent on Thursday.

At the meeting, with Prof Ksh Chourjit, Department of Pediatrics in the chair, the committee named JNIMS/JN Hospital Staff Co-ordination Committee was formed comprising 17 members on Thursday.
The committee also submitted a charter of demands to the Director, JNIMS and Medical Superintendent of the hospital.
Until the culprits are booked and necessary actions are taken up against them, it has been decided to continue the cease work strike, the charter of demands mentioned.
The hospital authority must give an assurance to the employees of the hospital and take remedial measures to avoid recurrence of such incident in future.
Security arrangement of all the wards, OPDs and casualty should also be beefed up round the clock, it added.
