Imphal, July 19 2012:
Manipur Hill Journalists' Union has strongly condemned the murder attempt on Tongam Rina, Associate Editor of Arunachal Times on July 15 by unknown miscreants.
In a statement signed by its secretary S Nengkhanlun, MHJU demanded the Government of Arunachal Pradesh to take stern action against the culprits and safeguard the journalists in NE India.
Journalist Rina (34) was shot at and critically injured by unknown gunmen last Sunday when she was entering her office.
The shooting of a woman journalist shocked the media fraternity.
This should not happen at all but it is unfortunate to say that journalists in the NE region are becoming easy targets of miscreants.
Attacking media/journalists is a gross violation of freedom of speech and expression, but attacks on journalists or intimidation of editors and writers continued unabated in the NE states.
Therefore, it is the high time that the government takes up necessary measures to safeguard media which is the fourth estate in a democratic country, the statement added.
