Drugs worth Rs 2.5 crore seized

Drugs worth around Rs 2 crore and 59 lakh in international market have been seized by police on Moreh-Imphal highway.
Speaking to media persons at his office today, Tengnoupal SP Th Vikramjit said that a team of Tengnoupal district police including commandos halted a car (Maruti Alto) at Tengnoupal police check-post at around 2 pm yesterday which was heading towards Imphal from the direction of Moreh.
On checking the car, 53 packets of Brown Sugar were found.
Subsequently, Md Salim Khan (27) of Sora Maning Leikai who was driving the car was arrested along with the contraband, said the SP.
Further, 50 other packets of Brown Sugar were found concealed on checking another car (Hyundai Verna) at the same check-post at around 5.30 pm.
The second car driven by one Laljuithang Gangte of Moreh Ward No 9, Moulhoi Part 3 was also heading towards Imphal from Moreh.
Laljuithang Gangte was also promptly arrested along with the drugs.
The total weight of the Brown Sugar seized from the two cars is 1.296 Kg and it is worth around Rs 2 crore and 59 lakh in international market, said the SP .
The police personnel who successfully seized the drugs were feted with cash rewards and a case was registered at Tengnoupal police station for further investigation.
Jiribam: A Tata truck (AS01JC-7697) carrying 3500 bottles of the banned Instacodin cough syrup has been impounded by a team of anti drug cell, Jiribam at Leingangpokpi, near the office of the Jiribam Driver Union on NH-37 around 12.30 pm today.
The team led by ASI A Krishna Sharma under the supervision of AK Sadananda Singh, Addl Supdt of Police (Ops) and H Basulal Singh, ASP (LO) were patrolling the area when the vehicle was intercepted.
Upon verification, the drivers were identified as Noor Hussain (28) of Barpeta, Assam and Rafiqul Islam (24) of Udalguri, Assam.
On inquiry, they disclosed that the consignment was loaded from Guwahati to be delivered to Imphal.
In an effort to strengthen the war against drug use, the police personnel also conducted frisking and checking of all vehicles in Jiribam district earlier in the morning today.
An FIR has been lodged at Jiribam Police Station.
The arrested persons along with the seized articles were produced before the Judicial Magistrate 1st Class, Jiribam for further legal formalities to proceed.
