Imphal, May 02 2015 :
An irate patient party today caused damages to the Out Patient Department (OPD) block of Advanced Speciality Hospital & Research Institute located at Palace Compound following the death of a patient.
Khaidem (O) Sanayaima (65) of Kongpal Khaidem Leikai died at the hospital this morning.
Soon after, infuriated family members, relatives and local people of the patient started attacking the OPD Block.
However, police kept the commotion under control.
Addressing a press meet later in the evening, MD of the hospital, Dr Ibomcha Thokchom said that the patient (Sanayaima) died of cardiopulmonary arrest.
Her life could not be saved although the attending doctors gave enough efforts, he said.
Sanayaima was admitted to the hospital in March.
She was discharged after she was given treatment.
Later on April 12 she was brought to the hospital in a critical condition, he said while also sending condolence to the bereaved family.
Dr S Pahel Meitei, the attending doctor of Sanayaima said that his patient (Sanayaima) had pancreas, water gland and kidney infections besides other problems.
Saying that no doctor wants his/her patients to die, Dr Pahel said that all concerned should refrain from mob injustice without justifiable reason.
He also said that the cost of health care would become unaffordable if such incidents happen often.
Besides, doctors may show lack of interest to admit or treat patients with critical cases.
Meanwhile, the patient party claimed the body after an understanding with the hospital authority.
The hospital also resumed normal service.
At the same time, the Indian Medical Association, Manipur State Branch, in a statement, condemned the incident that occurred today at Advanced Hospital.
