Imphal, September 01 2013:
In view of the flash floods seen in Imphal city when there is rainfall for some hours because of clogged drains, de-silting and uncluttering of drains using de-silting machine and cyclonic sludge silt container has started at Keishamthong today.
The de-silting machine and cyclonic sludge silt container were purchased by PDA last year from TPS Infrastructure Limited, New Delhi at the cost of Rs 66,44,175 and Rs 24,61,750 respectively.
But the machines were kept idle for a long time because neither operators nor workers were appointed to run the machines.
The two machines were put into use for the first time in Keishampat area today.
Keishamthong AC MLA L Ibomcha who monitored the de-silting work said that the two machines were officially hired from PDA at Rs 12,260 for eight hours.
The MLA said that he paid for the necessary fuel as well as the labour charge.

Claiming that the two machines were purchased at his insistence at the State Assembly to unclutter and de-silt covered drains which cannot be cleansed manually, Ibomcha said that drains along Tidim Road, Nganapithong, Moirang Purel, Irungbam Mapal, Hodam Leirak and Dobhi Machu would uncluttered and de-silted using the two powerful machines.
He observed that the charge fixed by the Government for hiring the machines is too high and needs to be lowered.
PDA Secretary M Gojendro said that the two machines were purchased to unclutter and de-silt drains in and around Imphal city particularly covered drains.
Waste materials clogging such drains which cannot be removed manually can be easily cleared using the two machines, he added.
