The first phase of Census exercise 2011 in respect of the state began today from the Imphal Raj Bhavan and followed by Chief Minister's Bungalow with the message for people cooperation from the Governor and Raj Bhavan.
Officials of the directorate of Census Operation Manipur counted heads of the family of Governor at Raj Bhavan to mark the beginning of the first phase census operation which was followed by the counting and recording of details of the family members of the state Chief Minister O Ibobi at CM' bungalow at Bapupara.
The inauguration of the operation at Raj Bhavan, authorities had launched the operation in other districts of the state.
For the Imphal east district, the exercise started from the house of the state rural development and panchayati raj minister, Md Allauddin.
In his message to the people, Governor, Gurbachan Jagat has stated that census is the only reliable source of information on Demography, Economic Activities, Literacy and Education, Housing and Household Amenities, Urbanisation, Fertility and Mortality, Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Tribes, Language, Religion, Migration, Disability and many other socio-cultural and demographic data.
The exercise will provide valuable information for planning and formulation of policies for the Central government and state governments and will be used by National and International agencies, he asserted appealing the people to extent their fullest cooperation with the officials of the census operation.
Thirty-five types of information relating to building material, use of house, drinking water, availability and type of latrines, electricity, possession of assets, etc., will be collected during the first phase of census, the Governor aware the people, he added.
State Chief Minister, O Ibobi, in his message to the people, reminded that the Census exercise is to be conducted countrywide with the theme "Our Census our future" appealed the people of all section of the society to cooperate with the enumerators, supervisors etc engaged in the exercise.
The Census Operation is for the welfare of the society and people.
Keeping this mind people should extent their fullest cooperation of the officials of the Census who will discharge their duty from house to house.
Ibobi also appealed the people to share the information wanted by the officials with sincere and honesty recalling that first phase of the Census 2011 launched today was as part of country's 15th decennial and considered as the biggest-ever census attempted in the history of mankind enumerating the country's 1.2 billion population and introducing National Population Register (NPR) for the first time.
The first phase census operation will continue till July and utilizing 5664 enumerators, 1021 supervisors, 40 officers in-charge and 172 master trainers in the exercise.
